Meta Implements New Disclosure Requirements for Digitally Altered Political Ads
Meta has put into effect its new disclosure requirements for digitally altered political ads, requiring advertisers to indicate when their ad contains AI-generated or digitally altered content. The move is aimed at preventing deception and providing transparency to viewers. The platform’s new policy comes in line with similar measures taken by YouTube and TikTok, which have also implemented tags for AI-generated content. Meta’s disclosure requirement is expected to become increasingly relevant as AI tools continue to improve in producing realistic depictions in ads, including full video clips of unreal incidents. To ensure fairness during election periods, Meta will enforce a blackout on political ads a week before the poll, allowing time for any misleading promotions to be debunked before people vote. Advertisers who fail to comply with the new disclosure requirements risk ad removal and/or bans. Meta also allows advertisers to update previously launched campaigns to include the new AI disclosure tag. The implementation of these disclosure requirements is a significant step towards maintaining transparency and integrity in political advertising.
