Meta Teams Up with Christian Louboutin to Sue Counterfeiter on Facebook and Instagram
As part of its ongoing efforts to enforce intellectual property (IP), Meta has collaborated with luxury fashion brand Christian Louboutin to file a joint lawsuit against an individual operating a counterfeiting operation on Facebook and Instagram. The lawsuit, filed in the United States District Court for the Northern District of California, claims that the defendant violated Meta’s and Instagram’s terms of service by promoting and selling counterfeit Louboutin products. Meta has been ramping up its IP enforcement by implementing enhanced detection and removal measures in its apps. Last year, Meta introduced the Brand Rights Protection Manager tool, allowing brands to upload images of their licensed products for detection of potential replicas. The company also added an Intellectual Property Reporting API for more efficient reporting of content that violates IP rights. The collaborative legal action taken by Meta and Christian Louboutin sends a clear message that such IP abuses will not be tolerated. It remains to be seen if Meta will pursue similar legal cases in the future.
