The save exchange

This is the one structural rule on the TikTok board that has no Instagram equivalent. On the Instagram side a save stands alone. Here it cannot.

A save is a strong signal precisely because real people rarely leave one without watching first. A video that collects saves from accounts with no watch time behind them is describing an arrangement rather than an audience, and it is a distinctive enough shape to be worth designing against rather than rate-limiting around.

So the save is offered immediately after a watch on the same video, inside the same session. It is the pairing that makes it plausible, not the volume.

There is a subtlety worth stating because it shaped the code: the session buffer is built once at the start, so a save can only become eligible for a video watched in some earlier session. Offering it straight after the watch is what actually makes the pair, rather than merely allowing one.

A save costs the person performing it almost nothing — one tap, on something they were already watching — so it is priced at 0.5×, meaning one point buys more saves than any other action.

Cheap to perform is not the same as safe in volume. Saves carry a daily cap of 25, one of only two exchanges with a limit of its own, and an action-mix ceiling of 25% of a video's views.

The mix ceiling is the more interesting of the two. Save rate is a ratio a platform can compute trivially and a creator cannot fake gracefully — a video saved by a quarter of the people who saw it is not describing normal behaviour.
